Cleveland Guardians pitcher Cal Quantrill was hit in the ankle but joked about the play after the game.
Cleveland Guardians fans held their breath in the series finale against the Detroit Tigers. The Guardians are already down two of their starting pitchers in Aaron Civale and Triston McKenzie, and losing another would be absolutely devastating.
So, when Cal Quantrill was struck with a ball to the ankle and appeared unable to walk off the field on his own power, fans' thoughts went to the worst.
Thankfully, we can all take a sigh of relief as it appears the scary play was just a stinger and Cal is alright. He even joked after the game about getting out of the inning without giving up a run. Quantrill said,
I don't think Quantrill would be joking about taking a ball hit his leg if he thought his next start was in jeopardy.
Even Terry Franconasaid that he thought Quantrill was even upset that he took him out of the game after the play.
Obviously, this was a close call for the Guardians with the number of injuries they already have to the rotation. But it's great to see Cal emerge from the play and can smile about it.
A ball hit over 100 mph screaming back at the pitcher is one of the scariest plays in the game because that pitcher has almost zero time to react and nothing but their glove to protect themselves.
Cal was definitely lucky!
