The Oakland Athletics score six runs on Zach Plesac and the poor Cleveland Guardians defense in the first two innings.
Zach Plesac's first start of the 2023 season did not go how he envisioned it.
Even after the Cleveland Guardians finally scored some runs early in the first inning with him on the mound, Plesac was pulled in the second with no outs after the game got out of hand.
Now, it was not all Plesac's fault. Amed Rosario and Myles Straw miscommunicated with one another and let a ball drop between them with two outs in the first. This extended the inning and allowed the Athletics to get on the board.
Then the second inning came along and things went bad too much, much worse.
The A's had five straight hits off of Plesac resulting in five runs. The nail in the coffin was a three-run homer by Jace Peterson to put Oakland up 6-2.
Cleveland's defense did not help Plesac at all, which is a normal trend for when he pitches. Last season it was the offense that never showed up when Plesac was on the mound as he had the third-worst run support in MLB with just an average of 2.87 runs scored per game.
However, Plesac didn't do much to help his case tonight either. This was his pitch mix for the 1.0 inning and 53 pitches he threw.
That many four-seam fastballs down the center of the plate are going to get crushed in the Big Leagues and that's what happened on Monday night.
Plesac's final stat line was 1.0 IP, seven hits, six runs, one strikeout, and one walk.
Now the Guardians turn to their bullpen to try to save
