GLENDALE, Ariz. -- After a comeback win on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds, the Seattle Mariners dropped a 3-0 decision against the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday afternoon at Camelback Ranch.
The Mariners are now 2-2 on the spring.
There's not much to take from this one, but here's what you need to know:
1) Logan Gilbert made his first start of the spring, tossing two innings. He gave up one hit and two walks while striking out two. His fastball was up to 97 mph and he featured his splitter, curveball and cutter.
After his outing, he spoke about trying to incorporate all his pitches in a condensed outing and said he made some very minor delivery tweaks this offseason.
2) Rob Refsnyder made his first appearance of the Cactus League, flying out in the first inning and finishing 0-for-2. Refsnyder said he was supposed to play Saturday but couldn't because of an event that honored a recently-passed former teammate.
3) Cole Young made multiple nice plays at second base, including starting a pair of double plays.
4) Colt Emerson intentionally dropped a line drive to try to turn a double play. The umpires did not allow it, but manager Dan Wilson said it at least shows that Emerson is thinking the game and always engaged mentally.
5) Jose Ferrer struggled in his Mariners debut, giving up two earned runs on three hits and a walk. He lasted just 0.1 innings. Wilson said he thought the ball was coming out of his hand well.
6) Carlos Vargas worked a crisp 1-2-3 inning, working around an error to get a double play. The reports on him this spring have been very positive.
The Mariners will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox at the Peoria Sports Complex.
--Reliever Matt Brash hasn't appeared in a game yet as he's dealing with a dental issue. Wilson expects him to be out a few more days.
--The Mariners are going to be forced into some tough roster decisions this offseason, with Miles Mastrobuoni appearing to be at the center of it all.
--The latest episode of the 'Refuse to Lose' podcast is out, as we hear from prospects Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan. Both pitchers came off extremely impressive, both on the field and off.
