A two-run homer from Luke Raley was unable to lead the Mariners to success in their first extra-inning game of 2026
SEATTLE — A two-run home run from right fielder Luke Raley in the bottom of the 10th inning was unable to push the Seattle Mariners to victory in its first extra-inning game of the season.
The Mariners (1-2) fell 6-5 to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of a four-game series on Saturday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
"Tough one tonight," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Saturday. "A one-run loss is always tough. Extra innings makes it a little more difficult. Got to give it to our guys that came back there in the ninth inning and battled to get the tie and then make it exciting there in the bottom of the 10th. ... That's what this team is all about. We kept coming back tonight. But just a little bit too late and a little bit short."
Raley's two-run homer, his third in as many games, came after a three-run top of the 10th from Cleveland.
Wilson and the Mariners were able to preserve two-time All-Star closer Andres Munoz for the 10th inning. Munoz took the mound with Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio as the automatic runner at second and center fielder Steven Kwan at the plate.
Kwan laid down a sacrifice bunt (that was later changed to a single on the box score) that was scooped up by Seattle third baseman Brendan Donovan.
The former Gold Glover hooked the throw left to first baseman Josh Naylor and was dinged with the error. Rocchio scored and Kwan advanced to second on the misplay.
That play gave the Guardians a 4-3 lead. Designated hitter Chase DeLauter hit a two-run home run to left field the next at-bat and bolstered Cleveland's lead to 6-3.
Munoz was able to get three consecutive outs after DeLauter's blast but the deficit was too large for Raley's homer to make up.
Saturday's loss was made more disappointing with the fact Seattle didn't trail for most of the game.
Right fielder Victor Robles, who made his first start of the year before being subbed out later for Raley, hit an RBI double in the bottom of the second that gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
Left fielder Randy Arozarena tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a wild pitch thrown by Guardians starting pitcher Joey Cantillo.
The two-run cushion seemed more than enough for Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo to work with. He blanked Cleveland through five innings and helped carry the 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.
Woo walked the lead-off hitter in the top of the sixth but followed with two outs. The free base came back to bite the 2025 All-Star when Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez hit an RBI double to cut Seattle's lead to 2-1.
Cleveland first baseman Kyle Manzardo tied the game at 2-2 the next at-bat with an RBI single.
Despite the disappointing sixth inning, Woo still finished with a quality start. He struck out nine batters, walked one and allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings pitched.
Woo's eighth strikeout was the 400th of his career.
"Yeah, pretty cool," Woo said after the game. "Hopefully I find the ball somewhere and put it up in my room and then shoot for 500 (strikeouts)."
In the seventh inning, reliever Eduard Bazardo got two outs but walked the next two batters he faced. Kwan hit an RBI single to give the Guardians a 3-2 lead before lefty M's reliever Gabe Speier took the mound to get the final out.
The Mariners guaranteed extra innings in the ninth inning when center fielder Julio Rodriguez registered his first base-hit of the season.
The three-time All-Star hit a two-out, game-tying RBI single that brought home Cole Young from second. Naylor was intentionally walked behind Rodriguez. Arozarena lined out to leave the prior two stranded and end the inning.
Seattle will try and secure a series split in Game 4 of the set at 4:20 p.m. PT on Sunday at T-Mobile Park.
Emerson Hancock will start for the Mariners and Slade Cecconi will start for Cleveland.
