The Seattle Mariners third baseman was removed from Friday's game against the Rangers in the top of the fourth inning

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson provides an injury update on third baseman Brendan Donovan, who exited a game against the Texas Rangers, on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

UPDATE: The story was updated at 10:13 p.m. PT with clarification on Donovan's injury status.

SEATTLE —  The Seattle Mariners had a poor start to the first of a six-game homestand in the first of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

The Mariners trailed 2-0 through three innings after right fielder Brandon Nimmo hit a lead-off solo home run in the top of the first inning and left fielder Wyatt Langford hit an RBI single in the top of the third.

The Mariners' luck grew worse at the conclusion of the third inning. Third baseman and lead-off hitter Brendan Donovan was replaced with Leo Rivas in the top of the fourth.

No information was given immediately on the reason for Donovan's removal. He previously made a diving grab to turn a 5-4-3 double play to close out the top of the third. He didn't receive an at-bat in the bottom of the third inning.

Donovan was 0-for-2 at the plate in the game when he was pulled. He has slashed .304/.437/.518 with a .955 OPS in 18 games with Seattle this season. He's hit three doubles and three homers with eight RBIs.

The M's ended up losing the game 5-0 after Texas scored one run in the seventh inning and another two in the top of the ninth. Rivas went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts filling in for Donovan.

After the game, Mariners manager Dan Wilson clarified that Donovan was pulled due to what he described as "hip tightness."

Wilson was unable to confirm the severity of the injury and said Seattle will know more about his injury Saturday morning.

Donovan was previously pulled from a game against the Los Angeles Angels on April 4 due to a groin injury. He missed two games against Texas on April 8 due to an illness. He also missed a game against the Houston Astros on April 9 and was out of the starting lineup for another game against Houston on April 10 due to the same illness.

The Mariners (8-13) will play the Rangers in game two of the series at 4:15 p.m. PT on Saturday at T-Mobile Park. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.
