PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- An emotional Bryan Woo spoke for just over three minutes outside the Seattle Mariners clubhouse at PNC Park on Wednesday night, trying to find the words after another clunker of an outing on the road.

Woo, an All-Star who finished fifth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2025, lasted just four innings in the Mariners' 11-1 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. He gave up five earned runs in those four innings. All of those runs came in the fourth inning, and the "one big inning" continues to be something that plagues him, especially on the road.

At home, Woo is 5-0 with an ERA of 2.00. On the road? He's 1-6 with an ERA over 6.00. He had an unlucky break or two in that fourth inning: A double play that was nearly turned here, a looping double that maybe could have been caught there, but he was hit hard in that frame, and the loss hit him hard too. 

As you can see in the clip above, Woo said that he wishes he could just flush this outing and move on, but he can't. He added that if he had answers for the media, he'd have them for himself. He said he felt the same as he did last Thursday when he dominated the Baltimore Orioles for seven innings. His postgame interview was hard to watch. It was even harder to be there in person.

As for where Woo goes from here? I can't tell you, and he clearly can't, either. This issue about pitching on the road is clearly in his head. He's frustrated and searching for answers, as he said, and he hasn't found them yet.

But the Mariners will need him to find them. While they still lead the mediocre American League West at 41-40, they are vastly underperforming the World Series expectations they entered the season with.

For what it's worth, manager Dan Wilson continued to speak in optimistic tones about Woo before Thursday's series finale.

The Mariners will look to win the series with the Pirates at 9:35 a.m. PT. Bryce Miller will take the mound against former top prospect Bubba Chandler.

Miller is 3-1 with a 1.58 ERA. Chandler is 2-7 with a 4.62 ERA, but he features electric stuff. First pitch is 9:35 a.m. PT.
