The Seattle Mariners beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night as the second-year player won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Seattle Mariners beat the New York Mets 3-2 in 10 innings on Monday night to run their impressive winning streak to seven games. With the win, Seattle is now 32-29 and in first place by 2.5 games in the American League West. The M's are seeking a second consecutive American League West title.
The game Monday certainly wasn't perfect from an M's perspective, as the team struggled to generate any consistent offensive traction: They had just two solo home runs and a single until Cole Young's walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.
For Young, the hit not only meant a Mariners win, but a small personal milestone. It was his 100th career hit as a big leaguer. He made his debut nearly one calendar year prior: May 31, 2025. He also ended that game with a walk-off, a fielder's choice against the Minnesota Twins.
The 22-year-old former first-round pick has shown much improvement over last year's first exposure to the big leagues.
After hitting .211 in 77 games in 2025, Young is hitting .250 this season with four homers and 30 RBIs, already more than he had a season ago (24). He's also made excellent strides defensively and has been generally regarded as the best defender on a subpar defensive group.
Young and the Mariners will take on the Mets again on Tuesday night with first pitch coming at 6:40 p.m. PT. The M's will send Logan Gilbert to the mound while the Mets counter with Jonah Tong, who may or may not follow an opener.
