The Seattle Mariners suffered a disappointing 8-6 loss against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

The Mariners' defeat gave the Royals the series win and set the M's 2.5 games behind the Athletics for first place in the American League West. Seattle is a disappointing 25-29.

Seattle will meet the A's in a three-game series from May 25-27 at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, Calif. The Mariners will need to sweep the Athletics to take first place in the division. 

While Sunday was a bad loss for Seattle, it was a good day for the team's top prospect.

Infielder Colt Emerson (No. 6 MLB Pipeline top 100), on the one-week anniversary of him being called up to the big leagues for the first time, went a perfect 4-for-4 against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

Emerson's four hits included three doubles. He also had an RBI and scored a run.

The former 2023 first round MLB draft pick became just the third player in Mariners history 20-years-old or younger to have a four-hit game. The other two players were Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez. Pretty good company.

Emerson's played in every single game for Seattle since receiving his major league call-up. He's played at either third base or shortstop every day.

The 20-year-old wasn't able to adapt to major league pitching right away. He had just one hit in the first four home games of his career, which was a three-run homer against the Chicago White Sox on May 18.

Entering Sunday, Emerson had a slash line of .118/.250/.294 with a .544 OPS. He also had his aforementioned home run and three RBIs in six games. 

With his four-hit day against Kansas City, the top-10 prospect now has a slash line of .286/.375/.571 with a .946 OPS to go with three doubles, a homer and four RBIs in seven games this season.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has already said this season that Emerson, who was called up in a corresponding move to Brendan Donovan being placed on the IL, will be be given runway for this season.

There will be ebbs and flows, as there is for any rookie. Emerson struggled for a large chunk of his first week in the major leagues, but his four-hit game and three-run homer May 18 is a good sign of what could be on the horizon for the 20-year-old.

The Mariners and A's will begin at 6:40 p.m. PT.
