The Seattle Mariners will host the Boston Red Sox for three games this weekend at T-Mobile Park as the two franchises go in opposite directions.

Seattle is 39-37 and leading the American League West by two games while the Red Sox are 29-43 and own the fewest wins in the American League. 

As the Red Sox continue to fall further from relevance, there will be inherent questions about their plans at the looming trade deadline, which is six weeks out (Aug. 3). 

What will the Red Sox do with Jarren Duran? Masataka Yoshida? Wilyer Abreu? Sonny Gray? Willson Contreras? Closer Aroldis Chapman? These are things that Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow will have to assess in the next six weeks, but as he does, ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney thinks that Chapman would be a great fit for the Mariners.

He made the following comments on the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast on Thursday.

'I really think when you look at the market, the guy who is the absolute perfect fit, and I'm not the first one to mention this, is Aroldis Chapman, the closer for the Boston Red Sox.

You and I have talked so many times about Andres Munoz and 'is he the guy that you fully trust?' And look, you give him the ball and he's going to get saves most of the time. But Aroldis Chapman is one of the three or four best closers in baseball.

I don't know what they would do with him if they got him. Would they prefer to keep their own guy, Munoz, since he's the player that they're invested in? But I think it'd be great for them to have a safety net, especially with (Matt) Brash out and with uncertainty about what's going to happen with Brash going forward.

And we get into the postseason and you have an Aroldis Chapman and let's say he's a setup man. My God, like the options that Dan Wilson would have between (Gabe) Speier and (Jose) Ferrer and Kade Anderson eventually will become part of that bullpen. They would have a chance to have an absolutely dominant pitching staff.

But this is early in speculation. The one thing I would say, Craig Breslow, who's the head of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox, has a reputation of being difficult to trade with because he has a hard time, the perception of other GMs, that he has a hard time making decisions.

I don't know if that fits Jerry Dipoto's style. And so much of the action that we see this time of year is which general managers match up well in making a deal, in their personality and their deal-making style. And I don't know if Craig and Jerry will necessarily be that."

Now 38 years old, Chapman is still as dominant as ever. A two-time World Series champion, he's got an ERA of 0.83 in 22 games. He's struck out 29 batters in 21.2 innings. He has 14 saves.

He currently has a mutual option for 2027, but that option will vest to a guaranteed year once he hits 18.1 more innings (40 total). That means that he'll be more expensive because he's no longer a rental player.

Chapman was suspended for 30 games during the 2016 season under the league's domestic violence policy. That story has followed him to whatever stop he's been at since then.

The Mariners tend to care about their image and have stayed away from players with checkered pasts. Do they want to go down that road here? It remains to be seen.
