How does the Seahawks Opening Night contest impact the M's?

After winning the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks are certainly destined for more primetime games in 2026.

Based on recent history, we already know that one of those games is going to be one of the first NFL contests of the new season.

According to sports television insider John Ourand, the Hawks could open up the 2026 campaign on a Wednesday night instead of the traditional Thursday spot given to the reigning champion. That could impact the Seattle Mariners.

Per Sports Media Watch on social media:

NFL eyeing Wednesday start to next season -- its first since 2012 -- either in Melbourne (International Series) or in Seattle (Kickoff Game), according to John Ourand of Puck.

What we know so far

The NFL has historically not played on the weekend before Labor Day, so if they follow that rule in 2026, the first NFL Sunday will be Sept. 13. That would make a possible Wednesday opening night on Sept. 9 and a possible Thursday game on Sept. 10.

How it impacts the Mariners

Because of fan interest, traffic, parking and transportation, it seems nearly impossible that the Mariners and Seahawks will be able to play at the same times.

The Mariners are set to be at home on that Wednesday (6:40 p.m. PT) against the Texas Rangers, making a possible NFL game a direct conflict. The Mariners play the Rangers at 1:10 p.m. PT on Thursday, making a football game that night much more doable.

***As a reminder: The Seahawks played an early afternoon game against the Buccaneers in October while the Mariners played the Detroit Tigers in a playoff game that late afternoon (5:03 p.m. PT). Clearly, it can be done with a few hours of separation.

The 49ers and Rams are ticketed to play in Australia, also likely in Week 1. Perhaps that game is better suited for Wednesday with the Seahawks opening on Thursday.
