The 21-year-old rookie has made winning plays of late, but the roster situation is about to get complicated.
There's been plenty of speculation lately among Seattle Mariners fans about the roster decisions that are facing the organization within the next few weeks.
The trade deadline is coming, Brendan Donovan, Rob Refsnyder and Brennan Davis are working back from injury, and Michael Arroyo and Ryan Bliss are playing well at Triple-A Tacoma.
Add all that up, and there are thoughts that the M's could eventually send 21-year-old future star Colt Emerson down to Triple-A Tacoma. One of the top prospects in the sport at the time of his promotion in May, he's hitting just .197 with seven homers and 21 RBIs. He's hitting only .168 in his last 30 games. Furthermore, Emerson was not in the original lineup on Monday, meaning that he was set to sit in three of the last seven games, and two of the last three against left-handed pitching.
However, he continues to make some impact. He had a potentially game-saving defensive play on Saturday, and he added a critical sacrifice bunt on Saturday and a critical sacrifice fly on Monday - both wins.
But, at what point do the overall struggles outweigh the benefits? Especially for a player who is so key to the organization's future?

But if his development is going to be stunted by his offensive struggles, and the team feels the need to sit him at times more regularly in order to cover for those offensive struggles, and the roster issues become kind of tough to navigate because of his presence, I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he just stays here for the entire year.
He certainly could, but in a lot of ways it's cleaner if he's not here, at least from a roster standpoint. And if he's struggling, maybe it makes everything a little bit easier to send him down.
Again, the Mariners are going to make a move, I believe, for an offensive piece. It might not be the impact offensive piece that you want. We've talked about Taylor Ward and Heliot Ramos. Like, I think those guys are absolutely on the table, but there's only so many roster spots.
And if everybody is healthy here, I mean, run through it again: Cal Raleigh, Josh Naylor, Cole Young, Colt Emerson, JP Crawford, Randy Arozarena, Julio Rodriguez, Dom Canzone, Luke Raley—that's nine. And then Brendan Donovan would be 10, Mitch Garver 11, Victor Robles 12. (Weston Wilson would be the 13th man on the position player side in this case).
There is only room for one other guy there. And is that one other guy Weston Wilson, Rob Refsnyder, Taylor Ward, Heliot Ramos? Is it Michael Arroyo? Is it Ryan Bliss? Like, there's a lot of guys now vying for that one spot.
How do you open up a second spot? Maybe Colt Emerson goes down. Maybe Luke Raley gets moved. That's why I think those things are at least part of the conversation, as far as I'm concerned."

The Mariners will take on the Reds again on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. PT as the M's send Luis Castillo to the mound against All-Star Chase Burns.
