SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners will be exploring uncharted waters in game two of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at 6:40 p.m. PT on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The Mariners, fresh off a 6-1 win against the White Sox in the series opener Monday, will be opting for a piggyback approach when it comes to its starting pitching plans Tuesday.
Bryce Miller, who made his first start of the year against the Houston Astros on May 13, will be getting the nod in game two against Chicago. Luis Castillo, a three-time All-Star starting pitcher, will throw multiple innings in relief.
This will be the first time Seattle's current coaching staff and players have tried a piggyback approach and everyone will be learning as they go.
"I don't know if there's a minimum pitch count, no," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview Tuesday. "I think you're trying to keep both of them stretched out as best you can. I don't think there's a minimum in any sense. It's a different kind of a layout and we'll just try to do the best that we can for both these guys."
Wilson said that ideally, Seattle will ideally be able to get a clean outing from both Miller and Castillo and things could go out without a hitch.
However, the Mariners skipper also hasn't ruled out using a reliever in a pivot role in between Miller and Castillo to give the latter ample time to warm up.
"I think we want to get Luis as long and as deep as we can and we want to get Bryce as long and as deep as we can," Wilson said. "And at the same time, win a ballgame. And all three of those things can be true at the same time. And that's what we kind of have to feel for during the game tonight and see how it progresses and goes through. That's how we're kind of approaching it. I hope it's clean-and-clean and we're good to go. ... But I think we'll be ready for any scenario that comes our way."

Castillo has a 6.34 ERA this season and has fanned 43 hitters in 44 innings pitched across nine starts this season.
Other notes
Seattle infielder Colt Emerson, who made his major league debut Sunday and has started two games in a row at third base, will be getting his first major league start at shortstop Tuesday against the White Sox.
Usual starting shortstop J.P. Crawford will be getting a day off after dealing with various bumps and bruises over the last several days.
"Just a day off for (Crawford)," Wilson said. "He's been grinding hard. Certainly has gotten his share of dings here from getting hit-by-pitch and whatnot. Just a chance for him to catch his breath today. ... (Colt's) definitely ready for both (third base and shortstop). I think we should be in good hands."
Emerson recorded his first major league hit against Chicago on Monday. It was a three-run home run to right field that resulted in the final runs of the game.
