The Seattle Times is reporting that Wilson is out after two full years as the M's skipper, one of which that included reaching the American League Championship Series in 2025.

According to a report from Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson informed the team prior to Sunday's season finale that he won't be returning as manager in 2027.

The story broke in the later stages of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Mariners are reportedly going to have a press conference on Monday, presumably to detail why this decision was made and to talk about what happens moving forward.

Wilson not returning in 2027 is not surprising. His job status has been speculated upon for weeks, with most outlets saying that he won't be back. What was surprising, was the timing of the news getting out.

While Wilson told the team pre-game, the team was celebrating Rick Rizzs's final weekend in the broadcast booth and the possible final games for JP Crawford and Randy Arozarena in Mariners uniforms this weekend.

The fact that the final day of the season couldn't be solely about Rizzs, Crawford and Arozarena is disappointing, but it coincides with the disappointing nature of this season.

The Mariners entered play on Sunday at 75-86, a far cry from the World Series expectations they entered 2026 with.

The Wilson managerial file

There's a large portion of Mariners social media that has wanted Wilson fired for months, citing his bullpen decisions, lineup constructions, the team's poor play, and the loss in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series in 2025, but there's no denying that he had success in this role for some time.

Wilson took over for then-fired manager Scott Servais in August of 2024, going 21-13 down the stretch of that season. The Mariners went 90-72 in 2025, winning the American League West for the first time since 2001. They advanced to the ALCS for the first time since the same year, losing to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Regardless of how you feel about the 2026 season, or about Wilson's hand in it, he delivered the most successful campaign in a quarter century.

At this time it's unclear if he will stay with the Mariners in any capacity, and he will undoubtedly be asked about this report post game on Sunday - if he takes the podium.

Wilson is in the team Hall of Fame for his work as a player and was named one of the team's Top 50 All-Time players earlier this summer.

What's next for the Mariners?

The Mariners will attempt to understand what went wrong in 2026 and they will get to work on righting it for 2027. There are likely to be other coaching changes, and there will absolutely be roster changes as well, but hiring a new manager is instantly at the top of the list.
