PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Seattle Mariners have been injured, inefficient, and frustrating in many regards this season, but free agent signing Rob Refsnyder has gotten the most vitriol from M's fans.

Brought into hit left-handed pitching and to help round out the edges of a championship roster, Refsnyder has disappointed mightily. The 35-year-old is hitting just .133 with three home runs. He's hitting .059 over his last seven games, which is just 1-for-17.

The Mariners continue to give him chances against southpaws: He pinch-hit with the bases loaded of Thursday's 5-1 loss against the Pirates, and then went hitless on Friday night in an eventual 3-1 win over the Guardians.

Last week, we looked at the organization's options with Refsnyder, and on Wednesday, we caught up with ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney about his future on the roster, as part of the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast.

"Yeah, and they're getting close, right, where you have to make a decision. You have to feel confident, if you're Jerry Dipoto, that this player is going to help you down the stretch.

And look, we talked about it. Rob Refsnyder has a pristine reputation, great clubhouse guy, someone who mashed against lefties to the point—and I've told you this before—when the Red Sox let him get away during the offseason, the Yankees folks were like, "Really? That guy? He killed us."

But he hasn't performed, and at some point you need to get results.

A lot of the feedback I'm getting from teams right now is that the messaging from some of the potential sellers is, "Look, we're going to wait till the All-Star break, and at the All-Star break we'll see where we are, and then we'll be willing to make trades."

I think that sort of timeframe makes sense for the Mariners. Give Rob Refsnyder some more opportunities, maybe see if he can turn things around. Listen to what Kevin Seitzer, their hitting coach, Edgar Martinez, and the Mariners hitting coaches are telling you about what's going on behind the scenes. What are they seeing in his preparation? Then you make a choice.

One of the X-factors in this is, I'll tell you, folks who work in front offices are telling me there just isn't a lot of right-handed hitting available. There are not a lot of great solutions necessarily on the horizon. Maybe some will emerge as we get closer to the All-Star break and the trade deadline.

But that's one of the complicating factors in this. Okay, if not Rob Refsnyder, then who can you bring in? Who can be a masher against lefties?"

The Mariners enter play on Sunday at 42-42 and 0.5 games up in the American League West. They'll finish out a series with the Cleveland Guardians at 10:40 a.m. PT.
