Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh was one of three finalists up for the American League MVP award on Thursday, which was voted on by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA).
The All-Star catcher finished second in MVP voting with 13 first-place votes, 17 second-place votes and 335 overall points.
Raleigh lost to New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who won his third career and second-straight MVP award with 17 first-place votes, 13 first-place votes and 355 overall points on the ballot.
Raleigh scored 110 runs in 159 games and hit 24 doubles and 60 home runs with 125 RBIs. He slashed .247/.359/.589 with a .948 OPS. His 60 home runs were the most in a single season by a catcher and switch-hitter in MLB history.
Raleigh became the first player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs for a playoff team and not win the MVP.
When the results of the MVP voting was announced, there was an outcry from the Mariners fan base on social media, with several fans blaming east coast-based writers for the reason Judge won the award.
According to former Seattle Times columnist Larry Stone, it doesn't seem east coast bias was at play in this year's MVP voting.
Stone shared a post on "X" (@StoneLarry) going over how the writers voted based on region.
According to Stone's reporting, voters in the Pacific time zone voted for Raleigh 5-1; Eastern time zone writers were split down the middle 7-7 and voters in the Central time zone favored Judge 9-1.
The Central time zone group includes writers from the Midwest and Texas.
Raleigh's historic season likely would have won the MVP in any other season, but Judge put up one of the greatest offensive seasons ever, regardless of position.
Judge scored 137 runs in 152 games and hit 30 doubles, two triples and 53 homers with 114 RBIs. He slashed .331/.457/.688 with a 1.145 OPS.
Raleigh will look toward 2026. He will report to spring training in February at the Mariners' spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz., and will be Team USA's starting catcher in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Raleigh could end 2025 with one more award in his trophy case. He's up for the Heart and Hustle award.
