The Seattle Mariners will enter Monday with a 1-0 lead in the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mariners took the lead in the best-of-seven series after beating the Blue Jays 3-1 on Sunday.
After the game, Seattle named Logan Gilbert as the starting pitcher for Game 2 of the ALCS at 2:03 p.m. PT on Monday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The Mariners could take a 2-0 lead in the ALCS with a win Monday. They can take that lead into Game 3, 4 and (if-necessary) 5, which all will take place at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The Mariners announced in the lead-up to Game 2 the starters for Games 3 and 4.
George Kirby will start for Seattle in Game 3 and Luis Castillo will start in Game 4.
Kirby will pitch for the third time this playoffs. He started Games 1 and 5 against the Detroit Tigers in the American League Divisional Series. He has a 2.70 ERA this postseason with 14 strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter and three earned runs allowed on nine hits (one home run).
Castillo has made two appearances these playoffs — one start and one out of the bullpen. He has a 0.00 ERA, has fanned four batters, has walked four and allowed one hit in six innings pitched.
For Game 5, Bryan Woo is "tentatively" scheduled to start, according to a report on "X" from Seattle Times reporter Adam Jude. Woo has been out due to right pectoral inflammation since Sept. 19. He threw a live bullpen Monday. Woo said the live BP was a "huge positive" step forward, according to a report from Jude.
"I thought (the bullpen) went really well today," M's manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame news conference Monday. "Looking at different things in terms of his (velocity), in terms of how he was throwing his secondary stuff. It looked pretty solid today. The next check mark is seeing how he responds to that tomorrow and how he comes back. As we've seen, his progression has been pretty steady. Pretty on the mark."
Woo's first appearance this postseason will be the first playoff outing of his career. He earned the first All-Star selection of his career this season. He posted a 2.94 ERA with 198 strikeouts in 186.2 innings pitched across 30 starts this year.
The Mariners clinched their berth to the ALCS in Game 5 of the ALDS on Friday. With the Game 1 win in the ALCS on Sunday, Seattle could clinch its first trip to the World Series in franchise history.
This is the Mariners' fourth ALCS in franchise history and first since 2001.
