Wilson explained why Donovan was out of the lineup for the second-straight game ahead of the latter being placed on the 10-day injured list.
UPDATE: The story was updated at 3:05 p.m. PT with quotes and updates from Mariners general Justin Hollander.
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners will be looking to avoid a sweep and salvage a game in the finale of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at 4:20 p.m. PT on Sunday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
If the Mariners do salvage a game against the Padres (which would also prevent an overall season series sweep), they'll be doing it without one of the most consistent bats in their lineup
Third baseman Brendan Donovan was absent from Seattle's lineup when it was released Sunday.
M's manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview that the team would see how Donovan would feel in pregame warmups to see if he would be available off the bench.
The injury was apparently worse than initially relayed, and Donovan was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 16) due to a left groin strain. It's the second time Donovan will be on the IL this year due to the same injury.
Donovan spent time on the IL from April 18-May 8 with the same injury, which is thought to be related to a sports hernia surgery he got last year while he was still with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Mariners attempted to manage Donovan's workload since his return, but the injury was apparently too severe to keep him on the active roster.
"(I've never had) this injury," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview Sunday. "I don't really know too much about how it feels and how it goes with this. The experience is that you have to take it day-by-day sometimes and go through stretches where it's better and go through stretches where it's not. Just have to manage it all and right now, that's where we're at."
Donovan will get a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection in his left groin and another in his adductor muscle, per comments made before the game by Mariners general manager Justin Hollander.
"We need to get this (injury) right," Hollander said in an interview Sunday. "He was feeling good when he came off the IL, he reaggravated it the last game in Houston when he was trying to hit for the cycle. ... Between the offseason surgery and the groin strain, it's definitely related. I've talked to the (high performance) staff. They feel strongly that when you have the core surgery, you're more susceptible to groin strains and core strains after that for a little bit. ... I don't have a timeline. Some of it will be determined by how he feels over the next few days. Something like two-to-three weeks on Brendan."
When Donovan has been in the lineup, he's been one of the team's most consistent batters and has taken primary lead-off hitting duties.
Donovan has slashed .274/.386/.452 with an .838 OPS in 25 games this season and has hit four doubles, a triple and three home runs with eight RBIs.
In Donovan's stead, shortstop J.P. Crawford will be hitting in the lead-off spot.
Other notes
--- The Seattle Mariners called up top prospect Colt Emerson ahead of the series finale against the Padres on Sunday. The move coincided with Donovan being placed on the IL. Emerson has played five games at third base with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers this season and played primarily the hot corner in spring training. Emerson will play third base in place of Donovan and hit ninth in the order.
Emerson is slashing .255/.347/.469 with an .816 OPS in 38 Triple-A games this season. He's hit eight doubles, a triple and seven home runs with 26 RBIs.
-- Right-handed reliever Matt Brash will be making a second rehab appearance with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in a game against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Sunday. He's been on the injured list since May 1 due to right lat inflammation.
