On Thursday's edition of the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast, ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney speculated that Baltimore Orioles outfielder Taylor Ward is the 'perfect' fit for the Seattle Mariners at the trade deadline. 

Now 32 years old, Ward is a nine-year veteran of the Los Angeles Angels and Orioles. He's hitting just .250 this season but he has a robust .378 on-base percentage. He has only five home runs, a far cry from the 36 he had in 2025 and 25 he had in 2024, but he's drawn 66 walks, which, as Olney noted, gives him an on-base skillset that the Mariners struggle with.

He has a $12 million dollar-ish salary this season, which will be heavily pro-rated by the deadline. For a Mariners team that is cash-cognizant, that's likely a palatable number. Because he's a free agent at the end of the season, the Mariners likely won't have to part with a well-regarded prospect, which is appealing as well. Ward could help the team against left-handers, where they are the worst in baseball in terms of production.

The right-handed group of Rob Refsnyder, Victor Robles, Patrick Wisdom, Weston Wilson, Leo Rivas and Ryan Bliss has failed to make an impact throughout the season.

While Ward would be an upgrade against lefties, there are real roster questions that the Mariners must answer if they are to acquire him - or anyone else.

The Mariners are allowed to carry 13 position players and 13 pitchers. Assuming full health moving forward, the Mariners will eventually end up here:

C: Cal Raleigh, Mitch Garver (2/13)

1B: Josh Naylor (3/13)

2B: Cole Young (4/13)

SS: Colt Emerson (5/13)

3B: JP Crawford (6/13)

OF: Julio Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena (8/13)

DH: Dominic Canzone (9/13)

UTIL: Brendan Donovan (10/13)

So, the Mariners have three roster spots available after this group is accounted for.

Currently, Luke Raley, Robles and Wilson make up three spots, while Buddy Kennedy is in the Donovan role.

Well, let's just assume that Donovan comes back eventually and takes Wilson's or Kennedy's spot.

That leaves a bench of Garver, Raley, Robles and the remaining Wilson or Kennedy spot.

If the Mariners were to acquire Ward, they could move on from the remaining Wilson or Kennedy spot, leaving this bench to consist of Raley, Robles, Garver and Ward.

Well, Refsnyder is currently on the injured list. Do they want to move on from him in order to go with this construction?

And, Raley, Robles and Ward are all outfielders. Do the Mariners feel comfortable having no true bench infielder? Or, are they just OK with the ability to move Donovan around as needed?

For now, it's all speculative, but it's this kind of thing that the Mariners have to think about moving forward.

Seattle is 44-43 and will take on the Angels on Thursday at 6:40 p.m. PT.
