The Mariners have a short bullpen heading into Sunday, and it's apparently being made even shorter by the team's injury situation.
TORONTO -- Heading into Sunday's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays, it's pretty clear that the Seattle Mariners are operating with a short bullpen. But the team's injury situation is making that bullpen even shorter.
Let's dig a little deeper here and update you on what you need to know.
What happened Saturday
The Mariners lost 4-3 on Saturday, dropping to 64-72 on the season. Rookie starter Kade Anderson was removed after 4.1 innings, leaving the team 3.2 full innings to cover in relief.
Eduard Bazardo struggled in his 0.2 innings, walking two and striking out one. He threw 22 pitches in the outing, and while he probably could come back on Sunday if necessary, will manager Dan Wilson have faith in him after his struggles?
In the same vein, Jose Ferrer also struggled in his 0.2 innings, and he threw 26 pitches. He probably could throw as well, though it's probable that Wilson would like to stay away from him.
Furthermore, Carlos Vargas threw 2.1 really solid innings in relief, throwing 21 pitches. While the total pitch count was low enough to return, the Mariners will likely continue to be cautious with him. He just came off the injured list a week ago, and when you factor in the warm-up pitches thrown in the bullpen and the warm-up pitches thrown between innings, Vargas threw significantly more than 21 pitches.
He's clearly down on Sunday.
What's definitely available in the 'pen?
Gabe Speier warmed up on Saturday, but didn't enter the game. Andres Munoz was milling around, but didn't really warm up.
Michael Rucker threw on Friday in an 8-1 loss, but should be available in this game. Seranthony Dominguez is in the same boat, so the Mariners have arms, but certainly not the full boat of arms.

Well, Bryce Miller was moved to the bullpen on Friday, and we've expected him to be in long relief this weekend - and moving forward.
However, on Friday, Emerson Hancock tweaked his left groin. It's unclear if he'll be able to start on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox, and as a result, Miller is in play to re-join the rotation.
As a result, Miller can't burn himself in relief, meaning he's essentially out of the mix. While Wilson played it coy on Sunday pregame, things became more apparent closer to game time when Miller was seen throwing an intense bullpen.
He's not pitching in relief on Sunday. He's in play on Wednesday. We just have to see if he'll actually have to make that start as we wait for word on Hancock.
UPDATE: 10:10 a.m. PT: Hancock has been put on the injured list, which lines Miller up to start on Wednesday in Boston. Nick Davila has been brought back, giving the M's another arm.
