After what transpired on Tuesday night for the Seattle Mariners in a loss against the Chicago White Sox, questions are being raised about how much power manager Dan Wilson actually has.

If you go on social media, he's been labeled a "puppet" who is just "following orders" given to him by the front office.

I think that it's fair to say that the organization, as a whole, concocts plans. I also think it's fair to say that, like any employee, Wilson likes to accommodate his bosses. I don't think that necessarily makes him a puppet, I think that makes him a human being, and it's something that every single one of us faces every day.

But in seeking out more information on the dynamic between front offices and managers, I spoke with ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney on the latest 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast:

"And it's going to be different with different teams and different personalities.

You know, when Terry Francona — I remember talking to him about this when he was managing Cleveland — and I said, because Cleveland's known as a team steeped in analytics. And I don't mean that in a negative way. That word always seems to — people have a negative connotation. They have a lot of information. A lot of it's great information.

And Tito told me that a lot of times he would say, “I hear what you're saying. Just give me a little bit of time to work with it with the players.”

And I've had other manager-GM situations where I've heard that the information will come down, and there isn't necessarily an expectation that they use it, but after the game, if the manager goes against the information and they lose, then they're asked to defend their decisions.

And a lot of it comes down to the independence and the personality of the manager.

My sense is that Dan's instinct, given his background, is that he wants to work with the front office. And so if the front office is recommending something, on the scale of the 30 managers, I think he would be one of the ones most apt to say, “Okay, we'll go with that.”

Again, I don't think that necessarily makes Wilson a puppet. I think it makes him a human being who has to pick his spots, and as the season progresses, I hope that he'll pick his spots when he feels it's important to do so.

Maybe game 50 of the season against the Chicago White Sox wasn't that spot. But maybe it will be the next time.
