The newest M's skipper will meet with the media on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. PT.

On Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners will formally introduce new manager Jason Kanzler at a press conference inside T-Mobile Park.

Our own Teren Kowatsch will be on site and will have his takeaways after the press conference is over, and we've already highlighted the five things we want to hear/learn from both Kanzler and Mariners' brass.

And you can form your own takeaways from the press conference by watching it live for yourself on the Mariners website, where it will be streamed. You can watch at that link.

The Jason Kanzler file

A Rochester, N.Y. native, Kanzler graduated from Penfield High School before playing college baseball at SUNY Buffalo, which no longer has a team. An outfielder, he hit .323 in college for the Bulls with 21 homers and 112 RBIs.

He was drafted in the 20th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins and spent parts of three years in the minor leagues, hitting .249 with 23 homers and 109 RBIs.

As a coach, he's spent time with the Houston Astros as a major and minor league hitting coach, reportedly developing solid relationships with Jeremy Pena and Alex Bregman along the way.

And he was also on the staff that won the World Series in 2022 under then-manager Dusty Baker.

After his time with Houston, he moved onto the Chicago Cubs, where he's spent the last three years as the director of player development.

Biggest questions for Kanzler

For me, I think there's a lot to like about Kanzler's hiring, but I do want to know how he handles being away from the on-field "stuff" for three years. I think he's probably, very clearly, an effective communicator who is a very smart baseball guy, but you can't simulate on-field experience. Who will he surround himself with that helps make that transition back to the field easier? And when will that staff be finalized?

And then less important, at least to me, is his age. Kanzler is just 36 and is set to be the second-youngest manager in the sport. How does he turn that youth into a strength as opposed to a weakness? How does he gain respect from the veterans on this team, some who have been playing professionally for nearly a decade?

Also of note on Kanzler

The "Refuse to Lose Territory" podcast will be going live after his press conference is over with full reaction and takeaways. Expect that podcast to begin at 3 p.m. PT. The link to watch live is here.
