What's the latest on Bryce Miller, Brendan Donovan and Cal Raleigh as the Mariners head to Chicago to face the White Sox?

After winning two-of-three against the Atlanta Braves in Seattle, the 18-20 Seattle Mariners are headed off to Chicago to face the Chicago White Sox for three games beginning on Friday night.

And as noted by Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, the Mariners will be getting to Chicago with a mostly clean bill of health.

According to Jude, Brendan Donovan is expected to be activated from the injured list for the series opener. He played one rehab game at Double-A Arkansas and went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.

Cal Raleigh is also expected to be ready to resume his role at the team's starting catcher. Raleigh missed three games entirely (Saturday-Monday) and was at designated hitter on Tuesday and Wednesday as he manages "right side soreness."

Jude also says that Bryce Miller feels ready for a return to the rotation after throwing 61 pitches at High-A Everett on Wednesday. The team is also leaning toward activating him during this seven-game road trip.

What does all this mean for the roster? Let's examine:

Donovan's spot

With Raleigh ready to resume his spot behind the plate, the Mariners will not need a third catcher on the roster. Donovan should take Jhonny Pereda's spot on the 26-man roster, leaving Raleigh and Mitch Garver as the team's backstops.

What else this means

It means that Leo Rivas can go back to his originally-designed spot as the team's utility infielder, with Donovan starting at third base. Rivas will be free to be a bench option, a pinch-runner or a defensive replacement. As a switch-hitter, he can also be a more platoon-neutral option off the bench.

How about Miller?

The Mariners face a more difficult decision with Miller at this point. If they are going to activate him on the road trip, do they plan on using him as a starting rotation member right away? Could they put him in the bullpen in the absence of Matt Brash and Gabe Speier? Could they go with a six-man rotation?

Could they jettison the struggling Luis Castillo to the bullpen or put him on the injured list?

Could Miller and Castillo somehow work in tandem to each other and create a "piggyback" situation?

All options are on the table at this point, especially as the M's navigate a pitching staff marred by injuries.

What else to think about?

Victor Robles is also working back from an injury and has been on rehab at Triple-A Tacoma. When he's ready to come back, the team figures to send down Connor Joe.
