The Seattle Mariners shortstop could join a select list if he plays at least 142 games.

Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford is headed for a historic achievement in the 2026 season. If he plays in 142 games or more, Crawford will become just the 10th member of the M's franchise to play in 1,000 games with the team.

That was astutely pointed out on social media by @M00NL1GHT.

The current group of nine who have?

    Edgar  Martinez - 2055

    Ichiro - 1861

    Griffey - 1685

    Seager - 1480

    Buhner - 1440

    Dan Wilson - 1251

    Alvin Davis - 1166

    Harold Reynolds - 1155

    Raul Ibañez - 1110

    About Crawford

A former first-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, Crawford will turn 31 years old in January. A nine-year veteran of the Phillies and Mariners, Crawford has spent seven seasons with Seattle. He was acquired by the M's before the 2019 season as Seattle underwent its rebuild, and he's been a fixture of the organization ever since. He's helped the Mariners get to the playoffs in 2022 and 2025, serving as a leader on both teams.

A Gold Glove winner in the COVID 2020 season, Crawford is a .248 career hitter with 67 home runs and 344 RBIs. A solid on-base player, he has a .340 lifetime OBP, and he led the American League in walks (94) in 2023.

    About his future

Heading into the final year of his contract, there's really no way to know what's going to happen with Crawford. He's beloved in the community and in the clubhouse, and that's evident by the cheers he gets from fans and the way his teammates speak about him.

But the Mariners also have Colt Emerson, one of the top prospects in the game, barreling toward the big leagues. He could start this season in the big leagues at third base, and then be ready to take over for Crawford in 2027. It's unclear if Crawford would ever be willing to move positions, or if the M's would be willing to bring him back as the shortstop and keep Emerson at third.

    Only time will tell.

About the rest of the M's offseason

The Mariners continue to be linked to second base options on the trade market, including Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Beyond that, they could use another reliever to round out the bullpen.

Andres Munoz, Matt Brash, Gabe Speier, Jose Ferrer and Eduard Bazardo are locks in the 'pen. Carlos Vargas figures to be in as well with Jackson Kowar, Troy Taylor, Casey Legumina and a handful of others remaining options - as of now.
