Rivas, who was just recently recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, lifted the M's to a much-needed 4-2 victory on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park.
The Seattle Mariners won their fifth straight game on Wednesday night, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 at T-Mobile Park.
It was an excruciating 13-inning affair in which both teams missed opportunity after opportunity. The Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out against Logan Gilbert early, and didn't score, and the Mariners loaded the bases with nobody out in the 11th inning and failed to score the winning run.
In the end, it was Leo Rivas's second career home run that won the game in the bottom of the 13th. And it made some history as well, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Leo Rivas is the fourth player in Mariners history with a walk-off home run for his first or second career home run, joining:
4/13/16 Dae-Ho Lee
9/28/07 Jeff Clement
4/13/85 Phil Bradley
All were second career home runs
The 27-year-old Rivas was just re-called at the beginning of September from Triple-A Tacoma, and it looks like he's going to play a prominent role in the rest of the season. A versatile infielder with the ability to do the little things, Rivas has become a fan favorite in Seattle. In multiple stints with the big-league club this year, he's hitting .288 with two home runs, nine RBIs and four stolen bases in 73 at-bats. He also put together a stellar Triple-A season, hitting .318 with 10 home runs.
While Cole Young started 71 games at second base this season, it looks as if Rivas is set to unseat him, at least against right-handed pitching, down the stretch.
A two-year veteran of the M's, Rivas is a career .260 hitter in 81 games.

They remain just one game back of the Houston Astros in the American League West, and they remain 1.5 games ahead of the Texas Rangers in the battle for the third and final wild card spot.
Seattle will start a new series on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Angels with first pitch coming at 6:40 p.m. PT. Bryce Miller will take the mound against Jose Soriano.
