The skipper spoke about the World Baseball Classic controversy between Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena.

With just over two weeks to go until the start of the regular season, the Seattle Mariners are embroiled in controversy, and it has nothing to do with anything happen in Peoria, Ariz. at the team's spring training complex.

It has everything to do with what transpired on Monday night at the World Baseball Classic in Houston, Texas.

In the top of the first inning, Mariners' left fielder Randy Arozarena, representing Mexico, tried to give a handshake to M's catcher Cal Raleigh, who is playing for Team USA.

Raleigh declined to give the handshake, electing to say something to Arozarena instead. After the game, Arozarena complimented Raleigh's family before delivering some very harsh words to him in Spanish. The problem? No one really knows if Arozarena was serious or not. He gave the quotes in a deadpan fashion, and the language barrier (for some of us) restricts the ability to decipher tone or mood around the comments.

Still, the interaction has become the talk of the day, distracting from the great environment around the tournament as we move toward the elimination round.

Back at Mariners camp, manager Dan Wilson spoke about the incident and said he plans to talk with both players.

Per Adam Jude of the Seattle Times:

“These guys are incredible athletes because of their competitiveness, and that’s where they’re at, and that’s why they’ve gotten to the level that they’ve gotten,” Wilson said. “But I also know that our team loves each other deeply. And that’s one of the key ingredients we have in that clubhouse, is how much they love each other, and so I don’t anticipate this being any bit of an issue.”

Per Jude's reporting, Mariners players elected not to speak on the topic.

All we can say with certainty

We have more than a half-decade of evidence of Cal Raleigh being a good teammate and now graduating into a clubhouse leadership role with the Mariners. He's never indicated that he has a problem with Arozarena or any of his other teammates. Raleigh and Arozarena celebrated on several occasions last season after big moments.

On the flip side, we have no indication that Arozarena has any issue with Raleigh. The celebrations are two-sided, with Arozarena also supporting Raleigh in big moments.

The duo is expected to talk about the incident at the WBC. Mexico is off until Wednesday while Team USA plays against Italy at 6 p.m. PT on Tuesday.
