SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are set to face their first left-handed starting pitcher of the season. Joey Cantillo will take the mound for the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the four-game series at 6:40 p.m. PT on Saturday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
As was expected for Seattle, it opted to go with a lineup specifically tailored to hit lefties on Saturday.
The Mariners' first lineup of the season against the southpaw was: Rob Refsnyder leading off at designated hitter, Cal Raleigh hitting second and playing catcher, Julio Rodriguez playing center field and batting third, first baseman Josh Naylor in the cleanup spot, left fielder Randy Arozarena hitting fifth, Brendan Donovan in the six-hole playing third, Victor Robles making his season debut in right field and batting seventh, shortstop switch-hitter Leo Rivas batting eighth and second baseman Cole Young rounding up the lineup penciled in ninth in the order.
The personnel in place for Seattle in the lineup isn't surprising but the order of the lineup featured several notable decisions.
Mariners catcher Mitch Garver, who entered this season as the team's backup behind Raleigh for the third-straight year, was absent from the lineup.
Seattle has used Garver in the lineup in the past to allow Raleigh full designated hitter days or to rest entirely. With it being early in the season and more lefties on the docket with the New York Yankees coming into town next series, it seems like the team is content with having Raleigh back out at catcher.
"We're gonna continue to monitor Cal's rest and whatnot as we go," Wilson said in a pregame interview Saturday. "We definitely have a couple of lefties coming up against New York, as well. Looking at everything and just weighing it all. I think it's important to keep guys as fresh as possible and today's an opportunity for (Robles) and (Refsnyder) to get in there and get fresh."
Refsnyder, who has garnered a reputation as an elite hitter against southpaws (159 wRC+ against lefties in 2025), will be tasked with providing Raleigh and Rodriguez with extra run opportunities in the lead off spot.
Donovan (75 wRC+ vs. lefties in '25), will be moving down to the six-hole after leading off for the Mariners the last two games against right-handed pitching.
Robles opened last season as the team's starting right fielder but spent most of the year on the injured list due to a fractured/dislocated shoulder.
Garver slashed .209/.297/.343 with a .640 OPS across 87 games last season. He had a 107 wRC+ against lefties.
