PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- On Tuesday's edition of the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast, I said that I thought the Seattle Mariners didn't have many options at the trade deadline, which is approaching on Aug. 3.

The biggest reason why? The Mariners largely have a competitive team in tact, and they don't really have many holes that need to be filled. Nearly the entire starting lineup is complete with a player under a long-term contract, or a young player that the team wants to give a runway to.

The starting rotation is complete, in fact, it has too many pitchers, and Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan are coming.

As I said, the only real options for the M's to upgrade feel like the bench and the bullpen.

Am I right in that assumption? I went and asked ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney on the most recent 'Refuse to Lose Territory,' which came out on Wednesday morning. 

"Yeah, 100 percent. And you know, the great thing is, is that this is the time of year when, you know, at the moment everyone is focused on the draft, but there's also conversations about what could be out there after the trade market, and you can begin to look at guys.

There's been a lot of speculation about Aroldis Chapman, who would be a great addition, I think, for the Mariners. Can you imagine a bullpen with four lefties in the postseason after Kade Anderson gets called up and maybe you acquire someone like Chapman with the idea of, okay, he's going to be a setup man, but he also would be a great plan B to close games if it didn't work out for Munoz, if he went into his slump and you needed to reach for an alternative, or if he pitched a number of games in a row? Last year, that guy was Matt Brash. You and I have talked about, you don't know what you're going to have in him at the end of the year. So Chapman would certainly be interesting.

You're going to be talking about a right-handed hitter, but I agree with you. And it's part of the reason why I think the Mariners are a sleeping giant. As they work through all the early season injuries they've had, as the rotation comes together, as they make decisions on the six-man rotation thing, it does feel like better days are ahead, and they're not sitting here the way they were even a year ago with these glaring holes that you feel like you've got to go out and make huge deals to fix.

You can just sort of pick your spots, and it's an enviable position for the Mariners to be in."

Though the Mariners have been injured and inconsistent this year, they do enter Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 41-39 and in first place in the American League West.

They'll play the Pirates at 3:40 p.m. PT with Bryan Woo on the mound.
