The Mariners will have one last series before the trade deadline to build momentum.
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners' disappointing season took another turn for the worse over the last week.
The Mariners went 2-5 on their most recent road trip, which included series losses against American League West rivals, the Texas Rangers, and the two-time defending World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Following the five defeats, Seattle is 53-57, 2.5 games out of first place in the AL West and three games out of the final wild card spot in the American League. Because Texas and the Houston Astros (2.0 ahead of the Mariners), play each other this weekend, it will be hard for the Mariners to gain ground in the standings.
Time is running out for the Mariners to build some momentum going into the trade deadline (Monday). The M's have one series before the deadline, a weekend set against the Minnesota Twins. Game one of the three-game series is set to begin at 7:10 p.m. PT on Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Here are the pitching matchups for the series between Seattle and Minnnesota.
July 31: Bryce Miller (Seattle, 2.75 ERA, 4-5) vs. Zebby Matthews (Minnesota, 5.21 ERA, 4-8)
Bryce Miller will be looking to get back on track and continue his amazing season after his roughest two-start stretch of the year.
The last time we saw Miller was against the Rangers on July 24. He didn't record a strikeout, walked one batter and allowed five earned runs on six hits (two home runs) in 5.1 innings pitched.
Zebby Matthews is coming off a quality start. He fanned one, walked three and allowed two earned runs on three hits in six innings pitched against the Athletics on July 24.
Aug. 1: Logan Gilbert (Seattle, 3.44 ERA, 8-6) vs. Connor Prielipp (Minnesota, 4.73 ERA, 3-5)
Gilbert was unable to continue his efficient and lengthy outings on the road in his last start against Texas on July 26. He struck out four, walked two and allowed three earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.

He fanned five, walked one and allowed one earned run on two hits in 5.2 innings against the A's on July 26.
Aug. 2: George Kirby (Seattle, 3.98 ERA, 8-9) vs. Taj Bradley (Minnesota, 3.65 ERA, 9-4)
George Kirby will be looking to flush his worst outing of the year, at least from a runs-allowed perspective.
The 2023 All-Star struck out three, hit a batter and allowed seven earned runs on as many hits (four home runs) in four innings pitched against the Rangers on July 27.
Taj Bradley will be entering T-Mobile Park coming off a dominant July that saw him register double-digit strikeouts in three-of-six starts. He fanned 10, walked three and allowed two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work against the Cleveland Guardians on July 28.
