The Seahawks recent Super Bowl win could set the M's up to do something for the first time in the last 20 years of sports history

This past year has a legitimate argument as the best for Seattle sports fans.

The Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in the Super Bowl on Sunday. This is months after the Seattle Mariners advanced to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, which is the first time the M's have ever been one game away from the World Series.

Those recent successes have been coupled with other notable Seattle sports accomplishments from 2025-26, including MLS club the Seattle Sounders winning the Leagues Cup, the WNBA's Seattle Storm making the playoffs and the PWHL's Seattle Torrent being announced and beginning their inaugural season.

The Mariners have a lot of expectations going into this season coming off the ALCS berth and the addition of 2025 All-Star Brendan Donovan via a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.

If history is any indication, the Seahawks' recent Super Bowl win could lead to those expectations for the M's being well-placed.

According to a post on "X" from Alex Mayer of the Mariners communications department, the last time a city's NFL and MLB team both won respective championships in the same year was 2004: the Patriots and Boston Red Sox.

The '04 season was the iconic year for the Sox, where they came back from down 3-0 in the ALCS to the New York Yankees to win the pennant. Boston went on to win its first World Series title since 1918.

The previous season, the Red Sox were eliminated in Game 7 of the ALCS. Just like Seattle was.

This is the first year since 2001-02 where the Mariners have entered a season with legitimate World Series aspirations. Expectations for the team extend beyond the fans, it also extends to a lot of odds and bet-makers, as well.

Seattle has +1,400 odds to win the World Series in 2026 according to FanDuel. Those odds are tied for fourth in the majors. The M's are tied with the Atlanta Braves. The clubs ahead of the Braves and Mariners are the two-time defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers (+220), the New York Yankees (+1,000) and New York Mets (+1,300).

The same site projects Seattle with an over/under win total of 89.5 wins in 2026, which ranks first in the American League West.

Seattle is heading toward uncharted territory with almost universally being considered a contender. Given where the team finished last year, the additions it made this offseason, the impending arrival of notable prospects such a as Colt Emerson and history being on its side, that anticipation could be well-placed.

If the Mariners win the pennant, it would mark their first World Series appearance in franchise history.
