SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners eight-game win streak ended in unceremonious fashion in a 7-1 loss against the New York Mets on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners (33-30), who for the entire homestand found a combination of timely offense and stellar pitching, weren't able to combine those factors in Wednesday's loss.

Seattle starting pitcher George Kirby had his shortest outing of the season in the series finale against New York. He struck out five, walked one and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in four innings pitched. He threw 89 pitches in the four innings of work, including 29 in the fourth.

"What has happened the last couple weeks, I know I'm so much better and more capable of getting these outs, getting ahead, whatever it may be," Kirby said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "Just got to keep my head down and keep going to work and keep up with my mental stuff, all that. Good stuff during the week and we'll just keep believing in my stuff and it's gonna turn around."

The first of the five runs conceded by Kirby came in the top of the first.

Mets first baseman Jared Young grounded into a fielder's choice which looked to have an opportunity to be an inning-ending double play.

Instead, Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor sailed the throw to shortstop J.P. Crawford over at second, which ended up bringing home shortstop Bo Bichette for the score

Kirby got two outs, including a strikeout, following the error and limited the damage to the one run until the top of the fourth.

The 2023 All-Star's final inning marked the continuation of bad luck for Seattle and smart small by New York.

The Mets loaded the bases with one out following a walk issued and two singles surrendered by Kirby.

Bichette hit a two-RBI single up the middle to bolster New York's lead to 3-1.

After Bichette's base hit, designated hitter Juan Soto and right fielder Carson Benge executed a double steal, which resulted in the latter stealing home while Mariners catcher Jhonny Pereda attempted to throw Soto out at second.

Young capped off the scoring in the inning and brought home Soto with an RBI double. The base-hit bounced off the first base bag in front of Naylor, which ended up ricocheting to his right out of glove reach.

When the top of the fourth concluded, the Mets' lead had ballooned to 5-1.

Seattle's only run to that point (and for the game) was a lead-off solo home run hit by shortstop J.P. Crawford in the bottom of the first.

The Mariners finished the game 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six stranded on the bases.

New York was also able to get to Seattle's bullpen, which had been nearly flawless during the homestand up until Wednesday.

Mets left fielder MJ Melendez hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth off Eduard Bazardo and Bichette capped off the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly to bring home catcher Luis Torrens, which came on a pitch from Alex Hoppe.

The Mariners will have an off-day Thursday before beginning a 10-game road trip comprised of a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers, a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles and a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

"The defense has been so solid and the pitching has been really strong," M's manager Dan Wilson said after the game. "Both starters and the bullpen and the offense has been so consistent. I think all three of those areas have been very consistent. That's what we'll continue to do as we get started again on Friday. That's what we have done and that's who we are as a team."

Game one of the three-game set against the Tigers will begin at 3:40 p.m. PT on Friday at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Bryan Woo will start for Seattle and Framber Valdez will start for Detroit.
