The Mariners added another southpaw, Josh Simpson, to the front end of the bullpen

The Seattle Mariners officially began full squad spring training workouts Monday.

In live bullpen sessions alone, several notable Mariners players, many of whom will compete in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, have already gotten reps in.

Pitchers Andres Munoz and Gabe Speier have already taken the mound in the spring. Hitters Josh Naylor, Cal Raleigh, Miles Mastrobuoni and Dominic Canzone have registered at-bats.

Many pitchers and hitters will get extended opportunities when those aforementioned players, and more, head to the WBC. And Seattle get a look at another arm it recently acquired.

The Mariners sent cash to the Miami Marlins on Monday in return for left-handed reliever Josh Simpson.

Simpson was added to the 40-man roster. Seattle starting pitcher Logan Evans, who will be out the entire season with elbow surgery, was placed on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move, leaving the 40-man roster at capacity.

Simpson has spent his entire major league career with the Marlins. He was picked in the 32nd round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Columbia.

The 28-year-old southpaw spent the better part of six years grinding through the minor leagues. Due to respective injuries of varying severity, Simpson only had one season with more than 28 appearances in the minor leagues in his career. He had only nine outings in 2024 due to cubital tunnel syndrome in his throwing elbow.

Simpson made his major league debut this past season with Miami. He posted a 7.34 ERA and struck out 36 batters in 30.2 innings pitched across 31 appearances in the majors. In the minors, he had a 3.41 ERA in Triple-A and fanned 29 hitters in 34.1 innings across 29 outings (two starts).

Simpson's 60 total appearances across the major and minor leagues marked a single-season career high. He was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Feb. 12, four days before he was dealt.

Simpson provides the Mariners with left-handed pitching depth that the organization entered the offseason in desperate need of.

Including Simpson, Seattle has four southpaws on the 40-man roster. The other three are Speier, Jose Ferrer and Robinson Ortiz.

Speier will be competing for Team USA in the 2026 WBC. Ferrer and Ortiz, were acquired by the Mariners this offseason in trades with the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively.

Due to the organization's unfamiliarity with Simpson, Ferrer and Ortiz, the three will likely get a lot of opportunities in favorable matchups in Cactus League competition when Speier heads to the WBC.
