One of the earliest moves of the offseason for the Seattle Mariners was acquiring high-leverage left-handed reliever Jose Ferrer from the Washington Nationals in return for Top 100 catching prospect Harry Ford.
The Mariners made another potential addition to its major league rotation Jan. 15.
Seattle acquired right-handed reliever Yosver Zulueta in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Dusty Revis. Zulueta was designated for assignment earlier the same day.
Revis was an 11th-round pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Western Carolina.
The Mariners added Zulueta to the 40-man roster and designated utility player Samad Taylor for assignment in a corresponding move.
Zulueta was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an international free agent out of Cuba on June 11, 2019. He was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on March 28, 2024, and claimed off waivers by the Reds the same day.
Zulueta made his major league debut for Cincinnati in 2024. He made 12 appearances and posted a 4.96 ERA and struck out 20 batters in 16.1 innings pitched.
Zulueta had seven more outings in the majors this past season. He posted a 6.14 ERA and fanned five batters in 7.1 innings pitched.
In 2025, Zulueta used a four-pitch mix of a four-seam fastball, sinker (two-seamer), slider and changeup according to Baseball Savant.
The 27-year-old righty threw his sinker the most (56 times). He offered his slider 48 times, four-seamer 25 times and changeup 11 times.
Opponents didn't average more than a .250 batting average against any of Zulueta's offerings. He allowed that mark with both his sinker and slider.
Zulueta generated a whiff rate of 29.6% and a put-away rate of 13.6% with his slider.
The Cuban hurler will likely have an opportunity to earn one of the final spots on the bullpen in spring training but he'll have to outshine several relievers the M's have experience with.
According to a projected depth chart from FanGraphs, Zulueta does not currently project to the major league bullpen.
FanGraphs projects right-hander Jackson Kowar in low-leverage; righties Eduard Bazardo, Casey Legumina and Carlos Vargas in middle leverage spots in addition to lefty Gabe Speier; Ferrer and right-hander Matt Brash as the set-up men and two-time All-Star Andres Munoz in the closer role.
The bullpen was one of the most tumultuous units on the team in 2025 and it looks like Seattle is attempting to build enough depth to avoid similar problems in 2026.
