The M's saw their starting pitching depth take a hit on Friday.

Brady Farkas on the loss of Logan Evans.

The Seattle Mariners put out a brutal injury update on Friday afternoon, announcing that starting pitcher Logan Evans will miss the entire 2026 season because of a Tommy John surgery that was performed Friday, Jan. 23.

From a team release:

Evans, 24, had surgery to reconstruct a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right arm on January 23. The UCL reconstruct and internal brace procedure was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Texas. The estimated recovery time is approximately 12 months.

Evans missed time at the end of the 2025 season with a forearm issue, but there was no indication at the time that he would need Tommy John just months later.

About Evans

A 12th-round pick out of Pittsburgh in the 2023 MLB Draft, Evans made his major league debut in 2025, going 6-5 in 16 appearances (15 starts). He pitched to a 4.32 ERA, striking out 59 batters in 81.1 innings.

He helped fill in for Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller, who missed time because of injury. George Kirby also missed time and didn't debut until late May.

What this means for the M's

This will certainly have a trickle-down effect and we'll cover it more in-depth on Saturday, but for now:

1) Is Emerson Hancock in line to stay as a starting pitcher and serve as continued rotation depth instead of a bullpen option?

2) Cooper Criswell, who the team traded for last week: Is he going to be a bullpen option in the wake of Hancock possibly having to remain a starter? Will the Mariners be able to keep him as organizational depth in Triple-A, also utilizing him as a starting pitching option?

3) How about Dane Dunning, who was recently signed to a minor league deal. How does he slot into everything?

Again, we'll have a fuller picture on Saturday.

Assorted news and notes
