The M's offense went ice cold again in a Tuesday loss to the Texas Rangers, but Donovan remains one of the few members of the roster playing to the back of his baseball card.
The Seattle Mariners offense went ice cold again on Tuesday night in a 3-2 loss against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
The M's have now lost six of their last seven games to fall to 4-8 entering Wednesday's afternoon game against the Rangers (11:35 p.m. PT).
There isn't much good to write home about for the M's right now offensively, but it was nice to see Brendan Donovan wreaking havoc at the top of the order again.
Donovan hit a leadoff homer off Nate Eovaldi as part of a two-hit night. It was his third homer of the season and paired him with Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson in team history.
Per @MarinersPR on social media:
Brendan Donovan is the 2nd player to hit multiple leadoff home runs within his first 10 games with the @Mariners, joining Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson (3 HR, 5/20/2000 vs. TB, 5/21/2000 vs. TB and 5/26/2000 at TB).
Donovan, who missed two games because of a groin injury, is hitting .343 thus far with a team-best 1.109 OPS. He was acquired this offseason from the St. Louis Cardinals in a prospect-driven package. An All-Star in 2025, he's also won the Gold Glove Award at the utility position in the National League, though his defense at third base has been subpar through the first 12 games.
About Henderson
A 25-year veteran of the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Anaheim Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and Mariners, Henderson is the most prolific leadoff hitter in baseball history. The all-time leader in runs scored (2,295) and stolen bases (1,406), he spent part of the 2000 season with the Mariners, helping them reach the American League Championship Series.
Seattle lost to the Yankees in six games that year. That was the first of two straight ALCS appearances in which the M's lost to New York.
As for these Mariners
They'll look to get off the mat offensively in a Wednesday afternoon matinee against the Rangers, but it will be no simple task. Tough left-hander MacKenzie Gore will take the ball for the Rangers. It will be his third start for Texas since being traded there this offseason from the Washington Nationals.
The Mariners will send right-hander Bryan Woo to the mound. He's winless thus far (0-0) but has pitched excellently in each of his two starts.
