The Seattle Mariners announced on Tuesday that they have reinstated veteran shortstop JP Crawford from the injured list. Crawford hasn't played since July 29 because of left wrist inflammation.

In a corresponding move, infielder Leo Rivas was optioned to Triple-A.

Here's what you need to know.

A 10-year veteran of the Mariners, Crawford has spent eight years in Seattle since arriving before the 2019 season. Named as one of the Top 50 players in team history earlier this summer, Crawford is a .245 career hitter with 77 home runs and 374 RBIs.

This season, he's hitting just .212, but he's still provided above average plate discipline. He's posted a .330 on-base percentage. However, it's been a disjointed season for Crawford, who has had three separate trips to the injured list. He's played just 87 of 132 games thus far. He has 10 homers and 30 RBIs.

--Earlier this season, Crawford moved to third base to accommodate rookie shortstop Colt Emerson, who took over shortstop. However, Emerson is on the injured list because of a wrist issue and will miss the rest of the season. That means that Crawford is headed back to shortstop, where he provides stability. However, he is also one of the poorest graded defenders in the league. Including his time at third base, he's in just the second percentile of range, and he's posted a -9 outs above average. 

With Rivas now out of the mix, Brock Rodden figures to be the backup at shortstop. He could start games at third as well. (Update: Crawford is starting at third base, and Rodden is starting at shortstop. Wouldn't you know it?)

--It's somewhat surprising to see Rivas get sent down instead of Rodden, who is just a rookie with less than two weeks worth of experience

--This also means that Patrick Wisdom is going to stay with the Mariners. The power-hitter is likely to be in the lineup on Wednesday when the Mariners face left-hander Jesus Luzardo at T-Mobile Park. He has 32 homers at Triple-A this year and one in the big leagues, but he's hit just .122 in 41 at-bats.

The 28-year-old has struggled this season, hitting just .147 in the big leagues, though most of those struggles came early in the season. Rivas was 3-for-10 over his last five games, providing a game-winning hit on Friday night against the Chicago Cubs and a crucial hit in the ninth inning of Saturday's 5-4 walk-off victory.

There's a chance he returns to the mix when rosters expand on Sept. 1.
