Seattle Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs, who has served as a team broadcaster 40 seasons, is officially retiring at the end of the 2026 campaign.
Rizzs, who's popular "Goodbye, baseball" and "Holy smokes" calls have been synonymous with M's baseball for four decades, will walk away after the team's 50th season, which will be celebrated this season.
He's been a baseball broadcaster for 51 years in all, including three with the Detroit Tigers.
“I’ve been blessed to live my dream as a baseball play-by-play announcer for the past 51-seasons, including 43 amazing seasons calling Major League baseball, 40 with the Seattle Mariners, three with the Detroit Tigers and eight in the minor leagues,” Rizzs said in a press release. “I can honestly say I’ve loved every minute, from my 25 years with the great Dave Niehaus and my friend, producer-engineer Kevin Cremin to my current partners, Gary Hill and Aaron Goldsmith.”
“As we embark on our 50th season in 2026, the amazing Rick Rizzs will begin his 41st behind the mic calling our games. Truly some Happy Totals,” Mariners Chairman and Managing Partner John Stanton said. “Rick has become the Voice of the Mariners, and his iconic calls, energy and love for our team and this community shine through every call he makes, and every interaction he has with a player, fan, or listener. Fans in the Northwest, and all of us at the Mariners, have been blessed to have two of the great hometown radio broadcasters in baseball history call our games since the start of the franchise in 1977. We look forward to celebrating Rick throughout the 2026 season as he concludes an amazing, Hall of Fame caliber career.”
Rizzs has been at the microphone for just about all of the biggest moments in team history, including the Eugenio Suarez grand slam which gave the Mariners the lead in Game 5 of the 2025 American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In the wake of Niehaus's death, Rizzs continued on with the popular "Get out the rye bread and mustard Grandma" grand slam call that he perfected.
And then there was this: His call of the 2022 Cal Raleigh home run that broke the M's two-decade playoff drought.
While the 2026 campaign will be a celebration of the players who have made up the Mariners history, it will also be a celebration of Rizzs, who has been at the center of so many moments that those players provided.
Holy smokes, indeed.
