The Mariners beat the Atlanta Braves on Monday night and Rick Rizzs paid homage to John Sterling at the end.
The Seattle Mariners defeated the Atlanta Braves on Monday night, securing a much-needed 5-4 win at T-Mobile Park.
Luke Raley and J.P. Crawford hit critical home runs in a five-run sixth inning to propel the M's to victory and the bullpen fired three scoreless innings. Seattle is now 17-19 on the season.
While the win was meaningful because it snapped a three-game losing streak and restored some good vibes to the fanbase, it was also meaningful because of the way that Mariners radio announcer Rick Rizzs handled it at the end.
Rizzs, the longtime Mariners broadcaster, paid homage to longtime New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling, who died this week at the age of 87.
Sterling served as the voice of the Yankees for 36 years, calling more than 5,000 consecutive Yankees games between 1989-2019. He saw every pitch of Derek Jeter's and Mariano Rivera's career. His signature home run calls and his "THE YANKEES WIIIIIIIIN" call have become synonymous with Yankees baseball.
And that's where Rizzs came in on Monday night, utilizing his own version of Sterling's victory phrase.
Rizzs has been the Mariners radio broadcaster for 40 years and is retiring after this season. He and Sterling would have come across each other several times in their careers, including during Mariners-Yankees playoff series' in 1995, 2000 and 2001.
The Mariners and Braves will play each other again on Tuesday night with first pitch coming at 6:40 p.m. PT. Right-hander Bryse Elder (3-1, 1.88 ERA) will pitch against right-hander George Kirby (4-2, 3.00 ERA).
Kirby is coming off a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins.

--The Mariners placed reliever Gabe Speier on the injured list on Monday with left shoulder inflammation. He joins Matt Brash as high-leverage options on the injured list. Brendan Donovan, also on the injured list, is slated to start a rehab assignment with Double-A Arkansas on Tuesday. There's still no word yet on whether or not catcher Cal Raleigh will need a trip to the injured list. He's missed the last three games with right side discomfort.
