Felnin Celesten is putting together a career-best season and it's been noticed by the Mariners' top brass.
SEATTLE — When the Seattle Mariners signed shortstop Felnin Celesten to a $4.7 million bonus during the international signing period in 2023, it came with the expectations that he would be one of the better players in the team's farm system in just a few year's time.
That signing bonus remains the largest the organization has given an international player.
The Dominican infielder hit those expectations from sources outside of the Mariners organization, as he has been included in several top 100 lists over his three years with the organization.
Celesten ended up falling off most of his lists toward the end of last season due to a string of injuries in his career - and inconsistency once he was promoted to the High-A Everett AquaSox in 2025.
A hamstring strain, a broken bone in his wrist and vertigo-like symptoms limited him to just 136 games from 2023-25. In 11 games with the AquaSox in '25, he slashed .158/.313/.289 with a .602 OPS and hit a triple and a home run with four RBIs.
This season, Celesten has started to find his footing and is putting together a career-best season.
Through 32 games, Celesten has slashed .339/.448/.508 with a .956 OPS and has hit nine doubles, a triple and three homers with 23 RBIs. He has also stolen eight bases in 11 opportunities.
Entering Saturday, Celesten is on a 19-game hitting streak.
Celesten's solid season and stretch hasn't gone unnoticed by Seattle's top brass.
"He's off to an awesome start," Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said in a pregame interview Friday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. "Obviously, he's in every game now. We haven't seen this version of him just because he hasn't been healthy over the last couple years. (We're) seeing him feel healthy, feel strong and feel good, both what he's doing offensively and the way he's moving on the diamond — the plays he's making defensively. I got to see him a couple times last week when the team was on the road. Really fun to watch."
The 20-year-old shortstop is currently ranked as the organization's seventh-best prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He's the highest-ranked Seattle prospect who's not on MLB Pipeline's top 100.
If Celesten continues his current level of play, it won't take long until he returns to top 100 lists and sees a promotion to the Double-A Arkansas Travelers.
Celesten will have an opportunity to extend his hit streak to 20 and 21 games in a doubleheader between Everett and the Vancouver Canadians beginning at 1:05 p.m. PT on Saturday.
The games will take place at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
