Another job has opened up, presenting a new challenge for the M's.

The Seattle Mariners got some increased competition on the managerial hiring market on Wednesday, with the Los Angeles Angels announcing that they are not bringing back manager Kurt Suzuki after one year with the team.

Suzuki was always in a tough spot, as he signed just a one-year contract before the 2026 season. Saddled with a poor roster and major injury issues, the Halos went 62-100, finishing last in the American League West.

They have the longest playoff drought in the sport. However, they represent an interesting problem for the Mariners now. Why?

They are a bit of a sleeping giant

1) It's no secret that Southern California is a baseball hotbed, and it's not a secret that Southern California has amazing weather that makes it a desirable place to live. Anybody who wants to be a manager would be interested in that kind of climate and lifestyle. So, the Angels are always likely to garner interest from candidates who can turn the franchise around, which causes problems for the M's.

2) And while the climate and lifestyle are good, the thing that should worry Mariners fans most is that Stan Kroenke is taking over as owner of the Angels. His portfolio is full of winners and with that resume, he'll receive even more interest from desirable candidates.

3) Part of the reason why Kroenke's portfolio is full of winners? He's full of money. He can pay a new manager well, while also paying players big money and also investing in the player development side of things.

And even if a salary cap is implemented which takes out the financial advantage in terms of salaries, Kroenke's money can go a long way on that development side, facilities side and analytics side.

The Angels, under Kroenke, figure to turn things around, and that is bad news for the Mariners. And with regards to this hiring cycle, the Angels could be ready to jump the Mariners in line when it comes to the "best available job."

The Mariners reportedly would like to have their managerial hire made by the end of the month. So far, we know that the M's are interviewing former Astros manager Joe Espada and that they are also interested in former Minnesota Twins skipper Rocco Baldelli.

We spoke to current M's broadcaster Ryan Rowland-Smith on the most recent 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast about what's next for the Mariners - on all fronts.
