Could Eugenio Suarez return to the M's in 2026?

According to Seattle Mariners general manager Justin Hollander, there is certainly a chance that the team reunites with slugging infielder Eugenio Suarez in 2026.

"Certainly a chance. We've maintained contact with Geno's reps. We love Geno. Geno brings a ton, not just on the field, the things that people see, the 49 homers, the big moments, but off the field: His steady presence, great makeup, what he brings to a clubhouse every day, it's really hard to replicate, so we've maintained contact with Geno's reps all winter long," Hollander told MLB Network Radio on Sunday.

    About Suarez

Now 34 years old, Suarez will turn 35 in July. A 12-year veteran of the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks, he has 325 home runs, including six seasons of 30 or more. He was with the Mariners from 2022-23 and then re-acquired by the M's at the trade deadline in 2025. He only hit .189 with Seattle but had 13 homers and 31 RBIs, helping the M's get to the American League Championship Series. He's a major source of power in the middle of any lineup. He's also extremely durable, having played at least 143 games in every season of his career since becoming a regular in 2016. He also played 57 of a possible 60 games in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

His grand slam in Game 5 of the ALCS is one of the biggest hits in Mariners history.

On the negative side? He's extremely streaky, and he strikes out a ton. He's led his league in K's three separate times and struck out 196 times this season.

How he could fit with the Mariners

Well, after missing out on Jorge Polanco in free agency, the Mariners have openings in their lineup. Suarez could play some third, taking some of the burden off Ben Williamson and Colt Emerson, who are expected to compete for the position, and he could play designated hitter, taking some of the burden off Dominic Canzone.

    Residual questions

If Suarez returns to the Mariners and plays mostly DH, that would force Canzone into a DH and fourth outfielder role. At that point, what's the role for Luke Raley? Is there one?

And are the Mariners still interested in Ketel Marte and Brendan Donovan, who they've been linked to on the trade market? It seems as if they'd have to figure out the resolutions there before going after Suarez.

    The money

Given his power, Suarez is probably worth a two-year deal at around the $40 million that Polanco got from the New York Mets. However, given the relationship he has with the Mariners, there's a chance that he could take less.
