The greatest single memory in the history of the franchise occurred on this day in 1995.

Oct. 8, 1995 provided Seattle Mariners fans with the greatest memory in team history.

It was on that day that Edgar Martinez recorded the biggest hit in franchise history, hitting a double in the bottom of the 11th inning against the New York Yankees to send the Mariners to the first American League Championship Series in team history.

Martinez's hit, affectionately known as "The Double," came off Jack McDowell.

Here's what you need to know.

About the 1995 Mariners

Because of 1994 strike that canceled the World Series, the 1995 season didn't start on time and lasted just 144 games.

However, the Mariners had to play a 145th game, playing an American League West tiebreaker against the California Angels. The M's won that game to capture the division, marking the first playoff trip in franchise history.

Not only did Seattle win the division, they came from 13.0 games back in the division on Aug. 2 to do it.

The Mariners then came back from 2-0 series deficit against the Yankees in the American League Division Series before falling to Cleveland in the American League Championship Series in six games.

About the legacy of the 1995 Mariners

Simply put? This team saved baseball in Seattle. The Mariners were likely going to move to Tampa Bay, but this season - and the fervor around it - helped get T-Mobile Park built. Some fans are tired of the 1995 nostalgia, and while I understand wanting new memories, nothing can ever replace what this team, and this moment, meant to the city.
