The Seattle Mariners started the offseason with a bang when they signed first baseman Josh Naylor to a five-year, $92.5 million contract.
The Mariners have also made several additions since then. The team acquired high-leverage, left-handed reliever Jose Ferrer from the Washington Nationals in return for top 100 catching prospect Harry Ford; signed outfielder/first baseman Rob Refsnyder to a one-year contract and signed catcher Andrew Knizner to a one-year deal to backup starter Cal Raleigh.
In addition to those moves, the organization has been linked to several players via the trade block and free agent market, including Kazuma Okamoto and Jorge Polanco.
Almost immediately since the offseason began, Seattle has been linked to the St. Louis Cardinals in a potential trade for second baseman, and 2025 All-Star, Brendan Donovan.
Despite reports of trade talks heating up during the MLB winter meetings, there's been no deal made.
There's been restlessness among fans waiting for a potential move and at least one Mariners insider believes the organization has one last move in them.
Seattle Times reporter Adam Jude appeared on Seattle Sports 710 on Jan. 13 and discussed the possibility.
"They've said all along, they want one more impact bat," Jude said on his radio appearance. "The name we've heard all offseason is Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals. I've heard from people in St. Louis he's gonna be traded. It's just a matter of when. I think the regime change in St. Louis has definitely slowed the pace of their offseason, as well. They've had to trade some other veterans, too. They've had to work through contract issues. ... I wouldn't be surprised if my phone starts to ding and the Mariners make a move for Brendan Donovan. My standing line the last few weeks whenever I bump into Mariners fans or people ask is, I would be surprised if the Mariners don't land Brendan Donovan, ultimately. That doesn't mean they will. But I know how much they value him. ... It's gonna get uncomfortable for the Mariners. It's gonna cost them a couple really good prospects, probably, and maybe a third prospect with some upside, as well."
A report from the Athletic's Katie Woo earlier in the offseason said the Cardinals were interested in switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 90 MLB Pipeline top 100) and outfielder Lazaro Montes (No. 29).
This past season, Donovan slashed .287/.353/.422 with a .775 OPS and hit 32 doubles and 10 home runs with 50 RBIs in 118 games.
He would figure to play second base for the Mariners, but he also has the ability to play left field and designated hitter.
