The Seattle Mariners toppled the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the major league level and then reportedly made an important move at the minor league level just hours later.

According to Francys Romero, the Mariners are promoting slugger Lazaro Montes to Triple-A Tacoma. He had spent the entire season at Double-A Arkansas after receiving a promotion to the Travelers in 2025.

Obviously, being promoted to Triple-A means that Montes is one step away from the big leagues, and that he's theoretically an option for the Mariners later in 2026.

Here's what you need to know at this time.

Just 21 years old, the Cuba native has drawn comparisons to Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez because of his prodigious power at the plate. In 79 games with Arkansas, Montes is hitting just .234, but Arkansas is a notoriously difficult place to hit. He's got an impressive .369 on-base percentage while also popping 25 homers and driving in 66 runs.

He hit 32 homers a season ago between High-A Everett and Arkansas. He's currently ranked as the No. 26 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

Well, we could start to see some real movement on the minor league front over the next few weeks as affiliates move clear of the nominal halfway point of the season. Michael Arroyo could also be a candidate to move from Double-A to Triple-A while outfielder Jonny Farmelo and catcher Luke Stevenson could be candidates to move from High-A to Double-A.

All eyes are also on pitchers Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan, who are potential options for the Mariners at the big league level. Both players will represent the M's in the MLB Futures Game next Sunday in Philadelphia.

After a 5-1 homestand, the Mariners are on the road again beginning Tuesday night. They'll take on the Miami Marlins for three games on South Beach before closing out the first half of the season with a three-game series in Tampa Bay against the Rays.

Both the Marlins and Rays come in on the heels of excellent months of June and both teams are over .500. The Rays are currently leading the American League East.
