It's been one week since the Seattle Mariners officially moved on from former manager Dan Wilson and several members of the coaching staff, which means we are now one week into the search for the M's next skipper.
President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has said that the search for the next manager will be "exhaustive," and as a result, we don't have much intel on candidates at this point.
ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney has previously told the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast that he thinks the job is desirable given that the M's are set up in a favorable division and have a number of young, core players locked up to long-term deals, but he's also said that the travel and the geographic location could be strikes against it.
But there are a few other questions about the situation that have people wondering if the job is less desirable than we think:
1) Dipoto and Justin Hollander clearly have pressure on them after a 76-86 season. Does a manager want to take a job knowing that the people that hired them could on the extreme hot seat?
2) Even despite the robust coaching staff changes, Dipoto and Co. elected to keep the pitching coach group in tact. How will a new manager feel about not being able to pick every member of their staff?
Jordan Shusterman weighs in
Shusterman, the Yahoo! Sports national insider and host of the Cespedes Family BBQ podcast, joined 'Refuse to Lose Territory' on Monday to give his thoughts on how desirable the job is and the questions that surround it.
"Historically, you look around the league, they talk themselves into way worse situations than this one.
I think that the Jerry and Justin job security thing is way less relevant in this than the coaching staff. Because I think that, like, yeah, that's part of this. But that is true in a lot of places. And sure, is that a little bit uneasy? Maybe.
But the main thing, and I feel comfortable saying this talking to coaches, just understanding this world. They're looking at a place where they can say, whether they've done it before and they understand what it takes, or they are first-timers and they can say, "Oh, I can win. Oh, I can. Oh my God, I can. Look at these players that I'm going to have."
But also, "Who can I work with? Who can I bring? Who can I bring as my bench coach? Who am I going to feel comfortable with in the dugout? Who's in the dugout so that I can trust them?"
Because the Jerry and Justin of it all, to me, is not about their job security, it's just about—it's about them as, as communicators, them as bosses, them as a, as a relationship, a reciprocal relationship. That is, and I've said this on other shows, and I will continue to say this, that is the ultimate unknown in this whole process.
Because I do believe that this is an extremely desirable position because of the roster, and because of, again, the division, right?..
So the, the roster I think speaks for itself. But the, the great unknown is, what do coaches around the game think about working for Jerry and Justin? Not because they might get fired, but because that's who they're gonna be working with on a daily basis.
I don't know that. We don't know that. That is what is going to limit the pool or expand the pool in ways that we don't know."
Wilson spent 2-plus years as the manager of the Mariners, taking them to the American League Championship Series in 2025. They finished third in the American League West this season. Scott Servais previously served as the manager for parts of nine seasons, getting to the playoffs in 2022.
