If the Mariners are going to acquire Stephen Vogt from the Cleveland Guardians, they'd have to make a trade for him.

On Friday, we discussed the situation surrounding the Seattle Mariners and Stephen Vogt with regards to the M's vacant managerial position.

It obviously remains unlikely that Vogt would leave the Cleveland Guardians organization, but until the Mariners have a new manager in place, it's worth keeping the discussion afloat.

Remember, Vogt is under contract with the Guardians, so if the Mariners were going to acquire him, they'd have to trade for him.

2012: Blue Jays trade John Farrell to Red Sox

The Red Sox traded infielder Mike Aviles to the Jays for Farrell and right-handed pitcher David Carpenter. Farrell spent five years in Boston, going 432-378 and winning the World Series in 2013.

2011: Chicago White Sox trade Ozzie Guillen to Marlins

Guillen, the former White Sox player, spent eight years with the White Sox as their manager (2004-11), going 678-617. He had five winning seasons on the South Side, including a World Series title in 2005. 

The White Sox released him from his contract after the 2011 season when he had one year left. The Marlins didn't technically have to give the White Sox anything once he was released, but they sent two minor leaguers to Chicago, effectively making it a trade.

Guillen went 69-93 in one season with the Marlins, finishing last in the National League East.

2002: Mariners trade Lou Piniella to Devil Rays

Piniella spent 10 years with the Mariners from 1993-2002, becoming the most famous manager in franchise history. He went to the playoffs four times (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001) and helped the M's get to the ALCS three times. He also was the architect of the 116-win team in 2001 and managed many of the best players in franchise history.

The Mariners sent him to the Rays in 2002 for outfielder Randy Winn. Piniella managed three seasons in Tampa Bay, going 200-285 and never having a winning season.

Winn spent parts of three seasons with the Mariners, hitting .287 with 56 stolen bases. He had been an All-Star in 2002 before the Mariners acquired him.

1977: A's trade Chuck Tanner to Pirates

Tanner spent one year with the A's, going 87-74, before being dealt to the Pirates, where he managed for nine seasons. He won the World Series in 1979. Manny Sanguillen went to the A's, where he hit .275 in one season with six home runs.

1960: Cleveland and Detroit trade managers

Joe Gordon was the manager in Cleveland and was traded to the Tigers for manager Jimmy Dykes.
