PEORIA, Ariz. — The Seattle Mariners will have Cooper Criswell start in a game against the San Francisco Giants at 6:05 p.m. PT on Wednesday at Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Mariners have Luis Castillo penciled in as the probable starter the day after against the San Diego Padres.
After Castillo takes the mound against the Padres, it will mark 10 days since right-handed starting pitcher George Kirby has pitched in a Cactus League game.
A few fans noticed this absence from the 2023 All-Star and voiced concerns on social media. Kirby missed most of the Cactus League schedule and the first two months of the regular season last year due to right shoulder inflammation.
As for Kirby's current limited action in Cactus League play, it's been a matter of scheduling rather than injury.
Kirby pitched in a minor league game during Seattle's off-day March 2. His only start before that was against the Chicago White Sox on Feb. 24. If the six-day rotation is the norm, that would make Kirby's next outing against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 8.
"(Kirby) got his work in (in the minor league game)," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in an interview Wednesday. "He's keeping right on schedule and all seems to be going pretty well."
Fellow right-handed starting pitcher Bryce Miller is currently dealing with an injury. He's been out for several days due to left side inflammation.
The team clarified the injury is not a concerning one but is still opting for a cautious approach as to not run the risk of re-injury down the line.
Miller played catch Tuesday and the reports coming out of it have been positive.
"All went well," Wilson said. "I think he's on track for where he needs to be. I think he's obviously anxious and wanting to get back out there, as we all want him to. But it's a matter of trying to be as smart as possible and take the time that he needs so we don't have anything further down the line on it."
Miller will have another catching session Wednesday and is "hoping" to have a light bullpen by the weekend, according to a post on "X" from Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish.
Miller had one Cactus League start before he was shut down with the oblique injury.
He struck out one batter, allowed three hits, no runs and didn't issue a walk in 1.1 innings of work against the Cleveland Guardians on Feb. 26.
