The Mariners will be without All-Star candidate Randy Arozarena and recalled High-A Everett outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. in a corresponding move.
SEATTLE — On the same day the Seattle Mariners got back veteran players, infielder J.P. Crawford and catcher Cal Raleigh, the team lost another one of their best players.
Per Mariners general manager Justin Hollander, the team is placing outfielder Randy Arozarena on the 10-day injured list due to a hamstring strain.
Seattle originally thought Arozarena would be day-to-day and available off the bench for Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. Arozarena's MRI showed mild inflammation, which axed plans of keeping Arozarena day-to-day.
Arozarena tweaked his hamstring trying to leg out a ground ball in a game against the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Hollander doesn't expect Arozarena's stay on the IL to be more than the 10-day minimum.
The Mariners will be selecting the contract from outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. from the High-A Everett AquaSox in a corresponding move. The Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers are currently in Salt Lake City playing the Salt Lake City Bees.
Arozarena has been one of the M's' best hitters this season. He's slashed .291/.377/.448 with an .825 OPS in 71 games and has hit 18 doubles, a triple and seven home runs with 33 RBIs. He's stolen a team-high 19 bases in 23 attempts.
Washington's unexpected call-up is an emergency situation due to Seattle's thin bench and the location of its current affiliates. The Mariners' Triple-A club, the Tacoma Rainiers, is currently in Salt Lake City playing the Salt Lake City Bees. Outfielder Connor Joe, who was up for the team for a spell earlier in the season, was scratched from the Rainiers lineup and is expected to be recalled Wednesday.
The AquaSox are in town in Everett, Wash., meaning Washington could come to T-Mobile Park in Seattle on short notice.
Not including Washington, the Mariners' bench is currently comprised of first baseman Josh Naylor, outfielder Luke Raley and catcher Mitch Garver. Naylor is day-to-day with a sore wrist and Raley dealt with late back tightness Tuesday afternoon. Both are available off the bench in emergency situations only.
With Naylor and Raley dealing with their current injuries, Washington and Garver are then only two healthy bats on the bench for Seattle for Tuesday's game.
Washington has slashed .190/.280/.394 with a .674 OPS in 44 games with Everett this season. He's hit eight doubles and seven homers with 22 RBIs and has swiped 14 bags in 17 attempts.
Washington was selected in the 19th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Purdue and has played two games above High-A with the Mariners organization.
