SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are attempting to find a semblance of momentum with the turn of the month.
A 5-3 loss against the Minnesota Twins on Friday resulted in the Mariners falling five games below .500 and finishing out July with a 9-15 record that month.
The Mariners are running out of chances to get back into playoff contention. They're three games out of first place in the American League West and the third AL wild card spot. They're set to get back 2025 All-Star utility player Brendan Donovan on Tuesday and could make more additions to the club at the trade deadline, which is set for 3 p.m. PT on Monday.
Seattle unfortunately had to suffer another loss to the roster before it made any additions or saw any returns.
The Mariners placed outfielder Luke Raley on the 10-day injured list due to a left forearm strain, an ailment that has plagued the slugger "for years," per Seattle manager Dan Wilson.
Outfielder Stuart Fairchild's contract was selected by the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in a corresponding move.
Raley, who's been the team's primary right fielder against right-handed pitching this season, missed Friday's loss against Minnesota due to the same injury. Victor Robles starter in his place.
Dominic Canzone will play right field for the Mariners in Saturday's game against the Twins.
There was no confirmation on how long Raley will be down, but comments made by Wilson in a pregame interview Saturday seemed to indicate the slugger would be out of action for multiple weeks.
"I think it's just a wear-and-tear thing," Wilson said Saturday. "It's something that he's dealt with for several years. It's just getting on to a point where it's more painful than it's been and preventing him from getting in there."
Raley is slashing .225/.284/.439 with a .723 OPS in 95 games this season and has hit nine doubles, a triple and 15 home runs with 39 RBIs.
Raley is the second player placed on the IL in the last two days. Seattle placed veteran infielder J.P. Crawford on the 10-day injured list with wrist inflammation Friday.
Both Raley and Crawford both attempted to play through their respective injuries before landing on the shelf. Catcher Cal Raleigh (oblique strain), designated hitter/outfielder Rob Refsnyder (knee inflammation) and Donovan (left groin strain) also attempted to play through injuries earlier in the year before going on the shelf.
"Our training staff does such a great job (but) guys want to be on the field," Wilson said. "You want that in your clubhouse and that's what these guys are. They're fighters, they're gamers, they want to be out there. Particularly (Raley), he wants to be out there. ... The communication has been great, the communication's been consistent, everyone trying to do what they can to keep everybody on the field as much as possible. But yes, it comes a point where the pain gets to be a lot and the pain gets to be too much and it's just not something they can sustain."
Without Raley, the Mariners will attempt to even the three-game series against the Twins in game two of the set at 1:10 p.m. PT on Saturday at T-Mobile Park.
