Miles Mastrobuoni spent parts of two seasons in the M's organization.

As noted by MLBTradeRumors, Seattle Mariners veteran utility player Miles Mastrobuoni has elected free agency after being outrighted off the team's 40-man roster.

Now 30 years old, Mastrobuoni will be 31 on Oct. 31. He's played parts of five years in the big leagues with the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and Mariners, the last two of which were in Seattle.

Lifetime, he's a .228 hitter with two home runs and 22 stolen bases. His biggest asset to a roster is his defensive versatility, as he can play essentially almost any position on the field.

He was an integral part of the 2025 Mariners team that won the American League West crown, appearing in 76 games and hitting .250 with 12 RBIs. He also hit a home run against the Houston Astros. Defensively, he appeared at third base, second base, right field, left field, first base and pitcher for the M's in 2025.

His 2026 season was more difficult, as he injured his calf in the World Baseball Classic with Team Italy and got a late start as a result. He appeared in only 13 games for the Mariners, hitting .192. He played in 56 games at Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .247 with three homers and 24 RBIs.

A well-liked player, he'll now look for his next opportunity.

One thing to realize

Once the probable lockout takes place, players who are on MLB 40-man rosters won't be able to play at all. Should major league games be missed, those players won't be playing obviously. However, minor league games DO get played during the lockout, but 40-man roster players can't play there either.

If Mastrobuoni signs a minor league deal somewhere, he'd be eligible to play in the minors during a lockout. Just something to keep under your hat.

Up next for the Mariners

The Mariners will continue their search for a new manager as we enter Week 4 since the end of the 2026 season. So far, we know that the Mariners are going to interview former Astros manager Joe Espada, and we also know that they are interested in former Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli.

The Mariners went 76-86 this season, missing the playoffs in the wide open American league West. It was their first full season finishing under .500 since 2019. They also finished under .500 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but that was only 60 games.
