Whatever weaknesses Dan Wilson seemed to have, the M's are trying to correct here.

I want to make this clear so it doesn't seem like I'm running from it.

I personally liked former Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson. Many of you didn't, and that's fine, but I advocated for him to keep his job through the 2026 season. I thought the success of the team in 2025 warranted that.

The team kept him around, exactly as I wanted, and then they moved on at the end of a disappointing 76-86 season. That was also very fair. The Mariners underachieved, and while Wilson wasn't the sole reason for that, he was part of it.

On Wednesday, the Mariners introduced Jason Kanzler as their newest manager and I shared my full takeaways from the press conference on the "Refuse to Lose Territory" podcast below.

But one major takeaway did stand out to me that was less about Kanzler personally, but more about the organization's desires to attack any weaknesses that they perceived Wilson had.

"Not only does he speak the language of talking to minor league and young players, he speaks the language of the front office.

Jason Kanzler spent three years in player development. Okay? 2024, 2025 and 2026 in player development as a director, as a coordinator. He speaks what the front office is speaking.

The Mariners also very clearly felt there was a communication gap in 2026. So Jason Kanzler has the ability and the experience level to bridge all of those communication gaps.

He can be the bridge between coaching staff and the front office, between the front office and the players, between the players and the staff as well, and between the majors and the minors. He has the ability to do all of that.

That should make you excited as well. That is something that I don't believe was a strength of Dan Wilson's.

As much as I advocated for Dan Wilson to keep his job in season, and I believe that he deserved to, and I'm glad they did, I don't believe that Dan Wilson—The things I think that Dan Wilson was good at were major league player relationships.

Dan Wilson's strength was his belief in his team, his faith in his guys, and his love for his guys. He was not, I think, the translator from the front office to the staff. I just don't think that was his strength.

So if you're looking for what is different, what did we not do well in 2026, Jason Kanzler seems to be a guy who attacks those gaps. The communication gap, the player development gap, that is something that he is going to be able to address."

With regards to the player development gap, that goes back to something Jerry Dipoto said at his end-of-season news conference. He essentially said that player development was stalling in the big leagues for the Mariners and that the organization needed to get back to reinforcing what it teaches in the minor leagues. Kanzler, given his experience in player development, should be able to help with that. And he should be able to connect all facets of the organization in that regard.

And with so many young players still part of the Mariners' immediate plans, it will be important for the Colt Emerson's of the world and the Michael Arroyo of the worlds to still develop once they reach the big leagues.
